Critic Reviews for The Remake of the End of the Greatest RPG Of All Time
Nostalgia, game development, and meta storytelling collide in this RPG-themed deduction game.
The Remake of the End of the Greatest RPG of All Time is a fabulous addition to the meta-game genre. I went in as a fan of old-school 16-bit JRPGs expecting a hit of nostalgia, but came away thoroughly impressed by the inception-like degree of layers within layers I unravelled in completing the game. It goes beyond the titular game to explore what makes developers tick, and challenging you to think outside the box for its puzzle, and if the sound of that appeals, then you should definitely give The Remake of the End of the Greatest RPG of All Time a go. This is destined to be a classic and perhaps one day someone will remake it too…
The Remake Of The End Of The Greatest RPG Of All Time is a fun escape room that merges discovery with combat like puzzles and a fun meta element. I do wish some puzzles had been a bit harder to guess, so I wouldn't have strayed too far though.
The Remake of the End of the Greatest RPG of All Time is a fun deduction game with a compelling narrative about nostalgia and game design. However, if you find yourself stuck, you’re better off looking for a real guide instead of referring to the in-game one.
The Remake of the End of the Greatest RPG of All Time is more intriguing on paper than as a practical experience, even if its brilliance lies in the fact that it is, in essence, a puzzle. There's a genuine fondness for classic RPGs and all the mythology surrounding them, but, like in Tenacious D's music, the game tries hard to discuss them, but it's just a tribute, one that gets lost in its own idea to the point of becoming just another example of what it mocks.

As much as I could write much more here about various aspects of The Remake of the End of the Greatest RPG of All Time, I think the game itself is better suited to convey its message. For me, it ended up being an even bigger surprise because it resonated so well with some of my own experiences, but taken on its own, I still think it’s a box of mysteries with a big heart.

I’m not going to dive much deeper into the puzzles themselves. That’s something you really need to discover on your own. But I will say this: the more I uncovered, the more uneasy I became. Part of that comes from the game’s overall presentation. The developers do a great job capturing this strange, janky atmosphere that constantly makes the experience feel slightly off in an intentional way. But most of the unease comes from the growing realization that there’s something else communicating with me from within the game itself.
The Remake of the End of the Greatest RPG of All Time is a massively rewarding experience, offering a brilliantly cryptic adventure that’ll really push you to think outside of the box. Sure, it might ask a lot of your patience at times, but between the overwhelming satisfaction of finally cracking its conundrums and the sheer ingenuity of its metagame approach (both in the 2D RPG world and what exists in 3D), it easily stands out as a special experience that’ll definitely appeal to puzzle fans.
