Heavy on nostalgia and fan service with the occasional violent delight thrown in, Requiem is a mostly fun Resident Evil title that still feels like a step down from its predecessor.

Somewhere in Resident Evil Requiem is a good horror game, but it’s lost in the franchise’s bullshit of retcons, red herrings, and lazy pandering. Any goodwill earned from the cool first half is wasted during the slapped-together mess of the second half. This baggage is weighing down the franchise from reaching its full potential. It tries to please everyone, and in its desperation, it pleases no one.

As it stands, Requiem is a Resident Evil of two halves - and that’s by design. It’s just a shame that it results in a somewhat confused new entry that often ends up obsessed with regurgitating the past for the sake of nostalgia as opposed to forging ahead forward towards the future of survival horror.

Resident Evil Requiem is an enjoyable sequel that successfully blends the different gameplay styles Capcom has developed over the years into a single cohesive experience. It is also likely the highest-production example of the survival horror genre to date. While its expensive development process clearly shows through strengths such as smooth optimization, innovative gameplay mechanics, and intricate level design, the game still carries some of the series’ familiar weaknesses, particularly in pacing and screenplay writing. Bringing together both old and new generations of players, Resident Evil Requiem feels like a celebration of everything the franchise has offered so far. Despite its flaws, it ultimately succeeds as an exciting experiment within today’s increasingly soulless gaming industry.

A heartbreaking tale of two games. The first half with Grace offers a tense, atmospheric survival horror experience that hints at a bright future for the franchise. However, the second half completely betrays that promise, descending into a chaotic mess of forced nostalgia, nonsensical retcons, and a disrespectful treatment of its new characters. While technically polished with solid gunplay and great visuals, Resident Evil Requiem is narratively bankrupt - a confused hybrid that sacrifices logic for cheap fanservice. A massive missed opportunity.

'Resident Evil Requiem' is a polished, fun entry that nails the mechanics but leans too heavily on nostalgia and padding. It’s stronger than 'Village' though not as bold as 'RE7' — and absolutely worth playing if you’re already invested in the series.

While the best of both worlds approach largely works, offering immersive, atmospheric horror with Grace's storyline and spectacle and tense action with Leon, Requiem ultimately presents an uneven, not fully realized campaign that runs its course sooner than expected. Hopefully, with many of the long-running storylines finally being put to rest, the new foundations set by Requiem offer a new path forward for the series, presenting a clearer vision of what comes next.

Ultimately, Resident Evil Requiem does exactly what it sets out to do – it closes this chapter of Leon’s story. I did enjoy it and I do plan on doing more of it but after how strong the previous installments were this just didn’t live up to it. Requiem is still a good next step in the franchise but the two protagonists doesn’t really add all that much to it and the shift between the two is inconsistent at best. All in all, I have to give Requiem the Thumb Culture Gold Award. A wonderful game just not the best in the series.

Resident Evil Requiem is a great game that almost hits the heights of being one of the best in the franchise. Unfortunately, the pacing gets a little too unruly in the latter half of the game, and creates a divide between the two characters and the feelings associated with them. While Grace’s sections encapsulate the true Survival Horror, it only remains grounded as Leon until you reach the Raccoon City section of the game, where all of the horror is stripped away completely, and you don’t get back to Grace for a good few hours. By then, you’ve become numb to the game's horrors and are just fully focused on dishing out pain. I loved Requiem, but I feel it should have been two separate games. Initially, I looked forward to the brief Leon sections, which felt like a nice palette cleanser and broke up the tension nicely, but when the game switches to have more of a Leon focus, it felt a little too close to the uninteresting Resident Evil 6 for me to truly love the game. Requiem is still an amazing experience and highly recommended, but at times feels like there were a few too many cooks in the kitchen for this one.

Resident Evil Requiem pulls off an impressive feat by blending modern gameplay mechanics with the grimy atmosphere of its origins. It delivers a particularly dense horror adventure, packed with nods and references, satisfying both fans of pure scares and adrenaline-fueled action junkies alike. The remaining question is whether the next installment will finally dare to clearly resolve the narrative arcs left hanging.

Resident Evil Requiem kicks off as a near-perfect slice of modern survival horror, but can’t sustain that brilliance across its full campaign.

Capcom's venerable series makes its move with an installment that brings together and blends its past, present, and possible future, more alive (or undead) than ever.

What Capcom has built here is a confident, frequently terrifying, occasionally overstuffed piece of survival horror that earns its place near the top of a very good franchise.

The ninth entry in the long running main series doesn't quite live up to the perhaps overly grandiose promises of the ultimate Resident Evil experience. The hybrid between survival horror and more straightforward action is still a definite success by the standards of the series.

Resident Evil Requiem delivers a familiar yet enjoyable horror action experience that isn’t without its flaws. Pacing issues can make Grace’s portions feel drawn-out and generally, she’s not a very likeable character. However, there’s enough spine-chilling atmosphere here to make up for its shortfalls.

Resident Evil Requiem keeps Capcom’s winning streak going, even if, at times, it does buckle under the weight of its own ambition. The overriding feeling after seeing the credits roll after the 10-hour mark was surprise that the adventure was over so soon. I wanted more, especially for Leon, whose sections felt like they weren’t afforded enough opportunities to shine. While post-game weapon and difficulty unlocks provide replay value, Requiem feels like it could have benefited from extra time in the oven. For as long as it lasts, however, Requiem is fantastic. It feels like the culmination of Capcom’s learnings from years of indecision over whether the series should be full-on horror or action, delivering the best of both worlds.

Resident Evil Requiem is a very good adventure that suffers from uneven pacing and sudden shifts in gameplay styles. The experiment of squeezing two games into one works well enough to be fun, but it’s unlikely to be remembered as one of the best entries in the Resident Evil series.
